The short answer
Ask for the unit size in cubic metres, whether collection and redelivery are included, the total over your whole term with VAT, every fee on top of the rent, the minimum term and exit rules, the late-payment terms and what the cover includes. Get the answers in writing and compare quotes side by side.
Two storage quotes for the same belongings can differ by a lot and still both be honest. They are describing different things. These twelve questions put them on the same footing, in roughly the order the answers matter. Ask them in writing if you can.
The unit
1. How big is the unit in cubic metres?
A name like “large” or “20 sq ft” tells you little. Ask for the volume, and what height it assumes. If it is sold by floor area, convert it with our square feet to CBM converter so you can compare it with a unit sold by volume.
2. How many units does my list need?
Ask them to show the sum. If your estimate and theirs differ by a whole unit, find out whose packing assumption is right. The storage unit size calculator gives you a count to bring to that conversation.
3. Is it air-conditioned, and all year?
“Climate controlled” can mean a cooled room, a cooled warehouse, or a cooler container. Ask what the temperature is kept at, and whether the cooling runs through summer and overnight.
The journey
4. Is collection included, and redelivery?
Both directions, separately. Many quotes show one and leave the other for later. Ask for each as its own line, with the address it assumes.
5. What does the crew do, and what do I do?
Who loads, whether packing is included, how many people come, and what happens if your building makes the work slower. Stairs, long carries and a lift that cannot take furniture are the usual causes of an extra line on the bill.
The money
6. What is the total for the whole term?
A monthly figure is a rate. Ask what you will have paid after three, six and twelve months with every fee counted, and what changes if you stay longer than planned.
7. Is VAT included?
VAT in the UAE is 5%. A quote should say whether the figure includes it or adds it, and a comparison is only fair when both are on the same basis.
8. Which fees come on top of the rent?
Registration, admin, packing materials, insurance, a charge for each visit, a fee to change unit size. Ask for the full list, even the ones that are zero.
The contract
9. What is the minimum term, and how do I leave?
Minimum period, notice you must give, and what happens on the day you want your things back. A longer term often carries a lower monthly rate, so ask what the early-exit rules are before you take the discount.
10. What happens if I pay late?
Ask for the late-payment terms in writing, including how much notice you get before the operator can act on your belongings. This is the clause people most often skip and most wish they had read.
The protection
11. What cover is there for my things?
Find out whether it is insurance or a damage guarantee. A guarantee to repair or replace what the operator damages is not the same as insurance, and it usually has a cap and a list of exclusions. Ask what is covered, up to what value, who declares the value, what triggers a claim, and whether the cover is in the quote or an add-on. Check whether your own home or travel insurance already covers stored goods.
12. How and when can I get at my things?
Notice needed, opening times, charges for a visit or a part-delivery, and where the unit physically sits. These matter more than people expect once the first month has passed and they need one box.
How to use the answers
Write them side by side for each quote you receive. Gaps tell you as much as figures do: a quote that does not mention redelivery or cover has not priced them, which means you will meet them later. The printable checklist has room for two quotes, and the cost page goes through what moves a price. If you want to start from a number of units, the calculator will give you one.
Questions about getting a storage quote
What should a storage quote include?
The unit size in cubic metres, the monthly rent, collection and redelivery, any one-off fees, the minimum term, insurance terms and VAT. If any of these is missing, ask for it in writing before you accept.
Is VAT charged on storage in the UAE?
Yes, VAT at 5% applies to storage services. Check whether a quote includes it or adds it on top, since the same unit looks cheaper if VAT is left out.
Can I negotiate a storage quote?
You can ask. Longer terms, bigger jobs and flexible collection dates are the usual levers. A second written quote on the same basis, with the same unit volume, is the best evidence you can bring.
Is my stuff insured in a storage unit?
Not automatically. Some operators offer insurance, others a damage repair or replacement guarantee with a cap, and it may be an add-on. Ask which you are getting and what it excludes, check your own home or contents policy, and do not assume the rent includes cover.
