The short answer
Choose collected storage (pods) if you have no van, a whole home to move or a building that makes loading hard. Choose self-storage for a small load you will visit often. They are sold in different units, so compare them in cubic metres, with transport counted on both sides.
What each one actually is
Self-storage is a room you rent and fill yourself. You bring a van or a car, load it, carry everything in and stack it. You hold the key or the code, and you can go back when the facility is open. It is sold by floor area, in square feet.
Collected storage works the other way round. A unit is delivered to your door, you or a crew load it, and it is driven to a warehouse. When you want your things back, they come to you. It is sold by the unit, and a unit is a volume in cubic metres. “Storage pods” is the everyday name for this, though operators use their own words for it.
A third product also gets called a pod: a unit that stays in your own building, in a car park or storeroom, and that you open yourself. It is closer to a private cupboard downstairs than to either of the above, and the sums differ, so ask which one a listing means.
StorageinUAE deals in the second kind. We say so up front because the three are often listed under the same search results, and they solve different problems.
Side by side
| Self-storage | Collected storage (pods) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who moves your things | You, or a mover you hire | The operator’s crew and truck |
| How it is sold | Floor area (sq ft) per month | Unit size (m³) per month |
| Where your things sit | A room in a facility you can visit | A unit in a warehouse |
| What you organise | A vehicle, helpers, and a loading slot at your building | A date, a clear route to the door, and a place for the truck to stop |
| Getting something out | Go during access hours | Arranged ahead. Ask how much notice it needs and whether a visit costs extra |
| Fair way to compare cost | Rent, plus transport both ways | Rent, plus collection and redelivery |
When collected storage is the better fit
- You do not have a van, and hiring one plus two helpers for a full flat is a day’s work you would rather not do.
- Your building makes moving awkward. Towers often want a service lift booked and a loading bay reserved, and a truck that cannot stop outside is a problem you would otherwise solve yourself.
- You are storing a whole home or most of one. Sofas, wardrobes and a bed frame are the pieces that turn a car trip into a removals job.
- You will not need the things for months. If you are away for the summer, between leases or leaving the country, you do not need a key in your pocket.
When self-storage is the better fit
- The load is small enough for a few trips in your own car.
- You will be back often. A business keeping stock, or a family swapping seasonal gear, wants a door they can open on a Tuesday.
- You want to hold the key and see the room your things are in.
Neither is cheaper in general. It turns on how much you store, for how long, and whether you count the cost of moving everything in and out.
The comparison trap
A self-storage ad quotes a monthly rate for the room alone. A collected-storage quote may bundle collection and redelivery, or list them as separate lines, so the two figures are rarely the same thing. The truck is the part missing from the first number. To compare fairly, put both on the same footing:
- Turn both into cubic metres. A room sold by floor area only becomes a volume once you decide how high you will stack. Our square feet to CBM converter shows the sum at three stacking heights.
- Add transport to the self-storage side, in and out: the van or the mover, twice.
- Ask each side what happens at the end. Notice period, minimum term and any admin fees are where two quotes for the same belongings drift apart. The cost page lists what moves a price and what to ask.
If you want a number to start from, the storage unit size calculator turns a room-by-room list into a volume and a count of units, with no sign-up.
Where we fit
We do not store anything ourselves, and we do not publish prices. You tell us what you are storing and where, we work out the space, and if you send an enquiry we pass it to storage partners who cover your emirate. They quote once they know the address, the access and the contents. If you decide self-storage suits you better, the cheat sheet below still helps, because the size maths is the same.
Questions people ask about storage pods
Do I need to hire a truck for storage pods?
No. In collected storage the operator brings the unit to your door and takes it away after loading. You do still need a place for the truck to stop and a clear route from your door to it, so check parking or loading bay rules with your building first.
Can I visit my things in a storage pod?
Operators differ. Pods usually sit in a warehouse, so a visit or a delivery back is arranged in advance. Ask how much notice is needed, how often you can ask, and whether each visit is charged.
Is self-storage cheaper than storage pods in the UAE?
Not always. Self-storage can have a lower monthly rate, but you add transport both ways and your own time. Compare both in cubic metres, over the same number of months, with collection and redelivery counted on each side.
What is a storage pod measured in?
Cubic metres. Self-storage is sold by floor area in square feet, which is why the two are hard to compare until you convert and pick a stacking height.
